“Who the heck are you and why should I read your blog?”
That’s actually a pretty fair question. We’re Bob & Kathy and we’re a pretty ordinary couple. We met 10 years ago, fell in love pretty quickly, dated FOREVER, and finally got married in 2017. We each have kids from prior marriages (who you’ll meet in some of our travels if you hang out with us) but none together. We went on our first trip together within a month of meeting and we’ve been traveling ever since. Some people like to spend money on clothes & handbags, some on cars & motorcycles, some on expensive jewelry…we love all those things too but if we could only spend money on ONE luxury for the rest of our lives, it would definitely be traveling.
We really aren’t sure why you should read our blog, as I already mentioned, we aren’t really anybody special and we certainly aren’t famous (or Infamous, thankfully) but if you enjoy seeing some cool destinations through someone else’s eyes, getting travel ideas and tips from regular folks who don’t have an unlimited budget or a private jet then we might by perfect for you. We prefer to fly first class, stay in at least 4-star hotels and to eat at decent restaurants but we aren’t above flying Spirit, camping in a tent or drinking way too much at a dive bar during bike week…or any other week now that I think about it. If you’re looking for ways to finance your desire to travel without having to spend your life chained to a desk waiting for two weeks of vacation each year we’ll share some advice about that too – we’re both self-employed and wouldn’t have it any other way. Also, we’re pretty sure no one else would hire us.
A little about Kathy
Born in Florida, my love of travel started as a child. We weren’t rich by any stretch of the imagination but I spent all year looking forward to our yearly summer vacation to Maggie Valley, NC and the summer my parents bought a motorhome and took us on a 7 week road trip from Florida to California was probably the highlight of my entire childhood. By the time I was 13 we moved from Florida to Chicago and I haven’t stopped since. I’ve also lived in Michigan, Indiana, New York, Hawai’i, the Dominican Republic and Georgia, where I’ve been since I met my now-husband in 2010. If I hadn’t met him I’d probably have added a few states to my “lived in” list by now but thankfully he loves to travel as much as I do so we get away enough that I don’t go completely crazy.
Many, many years ago I worked a regular job, thankfully it was in outside sales and included a ton of travel, but it didn’t take me very long to realize that working all year just to get two or three weeks of vacation wasn’t going to work out for me at all. I realized that I loved designing and have created an entire business selling personalized paper products. Recently, I’ve extended my product line to include all-natural candles and body products and I currently sell on Etsy and Amazon. You can visit my Etsy shop here. In future posts we’ll have lots of advice on creating a life that will allow you to spend more time doing the things you love.
And Bob…
He may have just turned 50 but he definitely doesn’t act like it. He’ll be featured often (mostly since he’s my favorite travel partner) but I probably won’t get him to write very much…he far prefers to do things that to write about them. Bob didn’t move as much as I did as a kid – he was born in Florida, grew up in Sandusky, Ohio and moved to Georgia as a young adult. But he definitely caught the travel bug at a young age and is always up for an adventure.
Like me, a traditional job isn’t going to work for him. He tried that once and left a few years later to start a trucking company, which is what he’s been doing for more than 20 years. If we’re in town he still actually drives more weeks that he doesn’t and I’m positive he loves his truck at least as much as he loves me. We specialize in hauling machinery for the paper mill industry and he still loves getting to see our customers and being out on the road. Thankfully he usually drives pretty close to home so I get rid of him just long enough to start to miss him and then he’s home again.
Hopefully you’ll stick around – I think you’ll find us amusing if nothing else. I have no idea what adventures we’ll go on next but I know they’ll be fun.
